About Muraena augusti (Kaup, 1856)

Muraena augusti, the species we describe here, is a type of moray eel. It lives in waters around Macaronesia, located in the Eastern Atlantic Ocean. This species inhabits depths ranging from 0 to 250 meters (0 to 820 feet), and is most commonly found at depths between 0 and 50 meters (0 to 164 feet). Johann Jakob Kaup first formally described this species in 1856, originally placing it in the genus Thyrsoidea; the species was later moved to the genus Muraena.
