About Munidopsis polymorpha Koelbel, 1892

Munidopsis polymorpha Koelbel, 1892 is a species of squat lobster. It is commonly known by several other names: the blind albino cave crab, Jameos blind crab, and jameito. This species is endemic to the island of Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands. Individuals of this species are small, blind, and pale. They can be found in the caves of Jameos del Agua, which are located within lava tubes formed by volcanic eruptions between 15,000 and 13,000 years ago. Ovigerous, or egg-carrying, females of this species carry only two eggs, which are relatively large. This differs from other anomuran crustaceans, which typically produce numerous small eggs. This species is the official animal symbol of the island of Lanzarote.
