About Mullus surmuletus Linnaeus, 1758
The striped red mullet, also called surmullet, has the scientific name Mullus surmuletus Linnaeus, 1758. It is a species of goatfish that occurs in the Mediterranean Sea, the eastern North Atlantic Ocean, and the Black Sea. Depending on which part of its range it lives in, this species can be found at depths from as shallow as 5 metres (16 feet) to as deep as 409 metres (1,342 feet). This species can reach a maximum total length of 40 centimetres (16 inches) in standard length, though most individuals only grow to around 25 centimetres (9.8 inches). The heaviest recorded specimen of this species weighed 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds). Mullus surmuletus is a commercially important species, and it is also popular as a target for game fishing.
