About Mulloidichthys vanicolensis (Valenciennes, 1831)
Mulloidichthys vanicolensis (Valenciennes, 1831), commonly known as the yellowfin goatfish, can reach a maximum total length of 38 centimeters (15 inches). This species has a red-orange back, whitish flanks and belly, entirely yellow fins, and a distinct yellow longitudinal band running along its sides. It feeds at night, with a diet consisting of crustaceans and worms, and forms large aggregations during the day. Yellowfin goatfish are widespread across the Indo-Pacific region; their range extends from the Red Sea east to Hawaii and the Tuamotus, north to Japan, and south to Lord Howe Island. This is a reef-associated species that most commonly inhabits lagoons and seaward reefs, found at depths between 1 and 113 meters (3.3 to 370.7 feet).
