About Motacilla aguimp Temminck, 1820
This species, the African pied wagtail (scientific name Motacilla aguimp Temminck, 1820), is a striking black-and-white wagtail. It has black upperparts that contrast with white underparts, a white supercilium, and a white patch in the folded wing. Juvenile birds are greyer overall, and individuals of the nominate subspecies have grey flanks. The species reaches 20 cm (7.9 in) in length. African pied wagtails are distributed across sub-Saharan Africa, ranging from the Eastern Cape northward to extreme southern Egypt, and from Guinea eastward to western Eritrea and Somalia. It occurs as a vagrant in Burkina Faso, Gambia, Mauritania, and the Western Cape. This wagtail lives in subtropical or tropical seasonally wet or flooded lowland grassland, alongside rivers, and sometimes in freshwater marshes. In some areas, it lives commensally with humans in towns and villages.
