About Monoplex parthenopeus (Salis Marschlins, 1793)

Monoplex parthenopeus (Salis Marschlins, 1793), commonly called hairy triton, has a maximum recorded shell length of 180 mm. This species has a worldwide distribution, including the Western Atlantic Ocean and New Zealand. It has been trawled at depths of 40–60 m off Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Its overall recorded depth range is from a minimum of 0 m to a maximum of 75 m. Hairy tritons are distinguished by particularly long planktonic periods. Their veliger larvae remain in the plankton for nearly 300 days, and can disperse as far as 4000 km. Along the west coast of North America, this is the longest known larval duration and dispersal distance recorded for any marine invertebrate.
