According to the World Register of Marine Species, this species occurs near Australia, Japan, the Hawaiian Islands, the Red Sea, and South Africa. While sightings of Monoplex exaratus have been recorded in Senegal and the Caribbean Sea, it is doubtful whether these sightings are valid evidence that the species is distributed in these areas.
