About Monopis crocicapitella (Clemens, 1859)

Monopis crocicapitella, commonly known as the pale-backed clothes moth or the bird-nest moth, is a moth species belonging to the family Tineidae. It was first described by James Brackenridge Clemens in 1859. This species has a nearly cosmopolitan distribution, and its original description was based on specimens from the eastern United States. The wingspan of adult individuals ranges from 10 to 16 mm. In western Europe, adult moths are active on the wing between June and October. This species is easily confused with Monopis obviella, because their wing markings are almost indistinguishable. It is currently unknown whether this species is capable of infesting human homes. Larvae of this species cannot survive at 51% relative humidity, but they thrive at 93% relative humidity.
