About Momotus aequatorialis Gould, 1858
The Andean motmot, also called the highland motmot (scientific name Momotus aequatorialis Gould, 1858), is a colorful near-passerine bird. Its range extends from northern Colombia to western Bolivia. This species is a resident bird of the Andes, found through Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru as far south as La Paz Department in northwestern Bolivia. In Colombia, it occurs in all three major Andean cordilleras, while in Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia it is only found along the eastern side of the Andes. Its elevation range varies by country: 1,500 to 3,100 m (4,900 to 10,200 ft) in Colombia, 1,000 to 2,100 m (3,300 to 6,900 ft) in Ecuador, 1,000 to 2,400 m (3,300 to 7,900 ft) in Peru, and 1,600 to 1,900 m (5,200 to 6,200 ft) in Bolivia. The Andean motmot primarily lives in humid montane forest, often near streams. It can also be found along forest edges and in secondary forest.
