About Modelia granosa (Martyn, 1784)
This species is currently classified under the scientific name Modelia granosa (Martyn, 1784). The shell of this species reaches an adult size between 25 mm and 80 mm. The shell is orbiculate, imperforate, and has a depressed-conic shape. Its base coloration is pinkish yellow; individuals may be solid unicolored, or marked with clouded patches of purplish or brown. The shell has seven rounded whorls. The top two whorls are smooth, while the remaining whorls have fine, closely spaced granules arranged in regular spiral rows. The body whorl is rounded and descends toward the aperture. The subcircular aperture is white and shows iridescence on its inner surface. The wide white columella is slightly excavated in its center. The thin callus is shiny and tinted rose. The operculum is ovate and flat on its inner side, with 5 to 6 whorls and a subcentral nucleus. On its outer surface, the operculum is white, thick, somewhat gibbous, finely tuberculate at its center, and subcanaliculate along its periphery. This species is only confirmed to occur in New Zealand.
