About Mnium hornum Hedw.
Mnium hornum Hedw., commonly known as swan's-neck thyme-moss, has upright stems that grow 2 to 4 cm tall. Its leaves range from 4mm to 8mm in length, with a toothed border made up of long, narrow cells. The leaf vein stops slightly below the leaf tip. Small, narrow triangular leaves grow along the lower portion of the stem. The capsules of this moss are 5mm long, with a lid that narrows abruptly into a short point, and the seta measures between 2.5 and 5 cm long. This species is native to Europe and eastern North America. It commonly grows in damp woodland environments, particularly on acidic soil, in oak-birch, beech, and pine woodlands. It can be found growing on the ground, logs, rocks, tree bases, and alongside streams. In 2012, researchers in Serbia discovered that Mnium hornum may have potential use as a source of arachidonic acid.
