About Milium effusum L.

Milium effusum L., commonly called American milletgrass or wood millet, is a flowering plant species belonging to the grass family Poaceae. It is native to damp forests of the Holarctic Kingdom. Its Latin specific epithet effusum translates to "spreading loosely". This species grows in damp deciduous woods and shaded banks. It occurs on winter-wet calcareous to mildly acidic clay and loam soils, and also grows over rocks in western Scotland. Its distribution covers northern United States and Canada, Europe (including Britain, but excluding the Mediterranean region), and extends eastward to Siberia and the Himalayas. A yellow-leaved cultivar of this species, 'Aureum', is commonly known as Bowles' golden grass. It is cultivated as an ornamental garden plant, and has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit in the United Kingdom.
