About Mictyris platycheles H.Milne Edwards, 1852

Mictyris platycheles is a species of crab that inhabits mudflats along Australia’s east coast, ranging from Tasmania and Victoria north to Queensland. It lives in large social groups, which is why it is commonly known as the soldier crab. Fully grown individuals measure 15 mm (0.59 in) across the body, and are around the same measurement in height. Their body colour ranges from blue to blue-grey. This crab feeds by taking balls of sand into its mouth, where it filters out edible detritus food particles.
