About Micrurus mipartitus (Duméril, Bibron & Duméril, 1854)
Micrurus mipartitus, commonly called the red-tailed coral snake or many-banded coral snake, is a species of coral snake in the family Elapidae. This species is native to Central America and northern South America, and it is common in agricultural areas of Colombia. Its venom is highly neurotoxic, and it causes seizures in prey by activating nerve proteins that trigger seizures within the prey organism. The species occurs across Central America and South America. The northern limits of its range differ between sources; some sources include Nicaragua and Costa Rica, but older records from these countries most likely refer to the species Micrurus multifasciatus instead. The IUCN Red List restricts the confirmed range of Micrurus mipartitus to Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador, with possible occurrence in Peru. It has also been recorded from Rondônia, Brazil.
