Microvelia macgregori is a very small bug that reaches a body length of approximately 2 mm, or 0.08 inches. This species is endemic to New Zealand, where it lives on the water surface across a range of aquatic habitats. These habitats include lakes, ponds, and the slow-moving backwaters of rivers and streams. It is the only member of the Veliidae family that occurs in New Zealand. Winged forms of Microvelia macgregori are common in upland tarns, while wingless individuals are the dominant form in lowland areas.
