This species was first described by Jacob Hübner in 1808, and its scientific name currently references Hübner 1813. It is a widespread species, with a distribution that extends across the Mediterranean region, southern Europe, and central Asia, reaching into southern Asia (including India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka) and continuing to the Russian Far East.
