About Microlipophrys canevae (Vinciguerra, 1880)
Microlipophrys canevae is a species of combtooth blenny. It occurs in the northeast Atlantic Ocean near Portugal, and also in the Mediterranean Sea. This species reaches a maximum total length of 7.5 centimetres, which is equivalent to 3.0 inches. A previously undescribed combtooth blenny species was described from the Adriatic Sea by French ichthyologist François Charrousset from two specimens, and was named Lipophrys heuvelmansi. In 2015, however, a comparison between these specimens and specimens of M. canevae confirmed that L. heuvelmansi is a junior synonym of M. canevae. The specific epithet of this species honors Giorgio Caneva, a friend of original describer Vinciguerra. Caneva's work encouraged Vinciguerra to study blennies from the Gulf of Genoa, which led to the description of this species.
