About Microhyla heymonsi Vogt, 1911
Microhyla heymonsi, which is also called the dark-sided chorus frog or the Taiwan rice frog, is a species of narrow-mouthed frog. Its distribution covers northeastern India, southern China, Taiwan, Southeast Asia extending south to the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra, and Great Nicobar Island. This species was originally described based on specimens from Taiwan. Like other microhylids, Microhyla heymonsi is a small frog. Males have a snout-vent length of 16โ21 mm (0.6โ0.8 in), while females reach 22โ26 mm (0.9โ1.0 in). Its dorsal surface is pinkish or greyish, with a black lateral band that runs from the tip of the snout to the groin, and completely covers the sides of the head. Microhyla heymonsi lives in a range of disturbed areas and secondary vegetation. It breeds in temporary rain puddles, paddy fields, ditches, marshes, and slow-flowing streams.
