About Microcachrys tetragona (Hook.) Hook.f.

Microcachrys tetragona, commonly called creeping pine or creeping strawberry pine, is a dioecious conifer species in the podocarp family, Podocarpaceae. It is the only species in the genus Microcachrys. This shrub is endemic to western Tasmania, where it grows as a low shrub up to 1 meter tall at high altitudes. Its leaves are scale-shaped and arranged in opposite decussate pairs, an arrangement that is unusual for members of Podocarpaceae. Superficially, these leaves look very similar to the leaves of the unrelated species Diselma archeri, which belongs to the Cupressaceae family. This species shares the common name creeping pine with a number of other plant species. Female plants of this species produce tiny, red, edible berries during the summer season.
