About Mexichromis multituberculata (Baba, 1953)
Mexichromis multituberculata, first described by Baba in 1953, has purple spots along the edge of its mantle, with scattered purple-tipped tubercles across the mantle. It is often mistaken for the closely related species Mexichromis katalexis. While similar in general appearance, M. katalexis has orange markings on the mantle edge, rather than the purple markings with a darker central tubercle seen on M. multituberculata. These two species can occur in the same location, and will even feed on the same sponge species. This species was first discovered in the Seto Inland Sea and Kii Channel, Japan. Later specimens have been recorded near Hainan Island and Hong Kong, China. It has also been photographed in Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Sulawesi, Egypt, and Thailand.
