About Mexichromis mariei (Crosse, 1872)
Mexichromis mariei has a white to pale pink mantle covered with scattered, rounded pink-purple tubercles. While the original description of this species noted red spots around the mantle edge, individuals typically have a yellow band in this area that may be partially broken into separate patches. The gills are pale pink, with a purple line running along the exterior rachis. The rhinophores are pale pink at their base and gradually transition to purple at their tips. This species was originally described from New Caledonia, and it is widespread across the central Indo-Pacific Ocean. Specimens found in Japan may belong to separate, related species.
