The scientific name of this species is Metzneria lappella (Linnaeus, 1758). Metzneria lappella has a wingspan of 13–19 mm. This species is present in most of Europe and is widely distributed across the Palaearctic region, reaching north to the Arctic Circle. It is an introduced species in North America, where it occurs from Maine and Quebec to Florida, and extends west to Ontario and Missouri. These moths primarily live in fields, roadsides, and waste places.
