About Metrioptera brachyptera (Linnaeus, 1761)
Metrioptera brachyptera is a species of bush cricket in the family Tettigoniidae, and is commonly known as the bog bush cricket. Adult body length for this species ranges from 12 to 16 mm. Its base body color is generally brownish, with additional green markings present on the upper side of the head, the forearm, and the sides of the body. The hind legs of female individuals are often partially pale greenish in color. As the species scientific name suggests, individuals usually have short, brachypterous wings, though long-winged genetic variants of the species do occur. The natural range of this species covers most of Europe, with the exception of the Iberian peninsula. It typically inhabits bogs, marshes, and other types of wetland habitats. Male M. brachyptera can be fairly aggressive, and they attract mates using a calling song that is a simple repeated "zirr".
