About Metopium brownei (Jacq.) Urb.
This species, scientifically named Metopium brownei (Jacq.) Urb., produces urushiol in its bark, just like its close relative Metopium toxiferum. Urushiol can cause contact dermatitis, so live trees and freshly cut logs must be handled carefully. The wood of this tree is a valuable source of lumber in Central America and the West Indies. It is distributed across Hispaniola (which includes the Dominican Republic and Haiti), Cuba, Jamaica, northern Guatemala, Belize, and the region of Mexico stretching from the Yucatán to Veracruz.
