Metlapilcoatlus borealis is a medium-sized snake species, formally described by Tepos-Ramírez, Flores-Villela, Velasco, Lara, García-Rubio & Jadin in 2021. Males of this species reach a maximum length of 66 cm, while females reach a maximum length of 60 cm. A combination of specific scale characteristics can be used to help identify this species: it has 22 to 25 rows of scales across the middle of its body, 4 to 6 nasorostral scales, 130 to 132 ventral scales, 26 to 35 subcaudal scales, 8 to 10 supraocular scales, and 2 to 3 interoculabial scales. This species can also be genetically distinguished by three unique nucleotide sequences.
