Mertensia longiflora Greene is a perennial herb that grows from branched, tuberous roots attached to a caudex. Its erect stem has an average height of around 18 centimeters (7 1/8 inches). The plant produces a small number of oval to lance-shaped leaves. Its inflorescence is a dense, often crowded cluster of hanging tubular flowers; the flowers are fused at the base and open out into lobed, bell-shaped mouths. Flowers are typically bright blue, but can also range from lavender to pinkish to nearly white, and grow up to 2.5 centimeters long. This species is native to western North America, ranging from British Columbia to California to Montana, where it grows in multiple types of habitat.
