The scientific name of this polypore fungus is Meripilus sumstinei (Murrill) M.J.Larsen & Lombard. Its cap ranges from 5 to 20 centimetres (2โ€“8 inches) wide, and its folded flesh can reach 8 to 20 millimetres (1โ„4โ€“3โ„4 inch) thick. The cap displays white to brownish concentric zones and tapers toward its base, and it has an indistinct stipe. In eastern North America, this species is found from June through September. It grows in large clumps on the ground around the trunks, stumps, and logs of hardwood trees, including oak. This mushroom is edible.
