About Merdigera obscura (O.F.Müller, 1774)

Merdigera obscura is a species of terrestrial mollusc with a binomial name Merdigera obscura (O.F.Müller, 1774). Adult shells of this species measure approximately 8.5–10.5 mm in length and 3–4 mm in width. Their shells have 6 slightly convex whorls marked by deep sutures. The apertural margin is reflected, white in colour, and is not connected by a callus or white layer along the parietal side. The entire shell is uniformly brown in colour, and its surface is covered in dense radial striations. The soft body of the animal is dark brown, with lighter colouration along its lateral sides and on its foot. The upper tentacles are long, while the lower tentacles reach only 1/4 of the length of the upper tentacles. When crawling, the animal holds its shell in a very high position, with only a slight bend toward the right side. Both juveniles and adults of this species often use camouflage. This species is rather similar in appearance to Ena montana. This species is distributed across north-western Africa and most of Europe, ranging from Portugal east to Russia. These terrestrial molluscs inhabit shady, rocky environments within deciduous forests, at elevations between 2,000 and 2,200 metres (6,600–7,200 ft) above sea level. They are most commonly found on tree trunks, under leaf litter or stones, and on walls.
