Mercenaria campechiensis (Gmelin, 1791) reaches a total length of 15 to 18 centimeters, which equals 5.9 to 7.1 inches. Individuals of this species can live to at least 28 years of age. Its shell has a roundish shape. The species can be distinguished from the closely related Mercenaria mercenaria by the anterior concentric ridges present on its shell; these ridges are absent in Mercenaria mercenaria.
