About Memecylon umbellatum Burm.fil.

Memecylon umbellatum Burm.fil. is a large shrub or small tree. Its bark and branches are very hard, which is why it is commonly called Ironwood; another possible origin for this name is the species’ important historical role in Wootz steel production. Its leaves are simple and arranged oppositely, and they contain glucose. The plant produces blue flowers that grow in cymose umbels. Its fruit is a round, bluish-black berry. Flowering occurs from February to March.
