About Melongena corona (Gmelin, 1791)

The shell of Melongena corona is extremely variable in the degree of its spiny ornamentation. Some shells of this species are much smoother than others. Adult snails can reach a maximum length of around 5 inches (12 cm). Their shells are mostly dark brown with irregular white or cream bands, though an unbanded, overall light yellow color form also exists. Smoother forms have small spines on their largest whorl, while the most spiny forms have multiple rows of spines. The shell aperture can be closed voluntarily by an operculum. This species is distributed in the Western Atlantic Ocean, specifically in Florida.
