About Melithreptus affinis (R.Lesson, 1839)

This species, the black-headed honeyeater, has the scientific name Melithreptus affinis (R.Lesson, 1839). It is a mid-sized honeyeater with olive-green upperparts and white underparts. Its head is entirely black, and it does not have the white nape patch that its related species have. It has a blue-white patch of bare skin surrounding the eye, and a small beak. The black-headed honeyeater is endemic to Tasmania, King Island, and the Furneaux Group. Within this range, it lives in wet sclerophyll forests, dry sclerophyll forests, scrub, heathland, and subalpine habitats, reaching altitudes up to 1200 m (4000 ft).
