About Meliscaeva auricollis (Meigen, 1822)

Scientific name: Meliscaeva auricollis (Meigen, 1822)

Description: Wing length ranges from 6 to 9.5 mm. The body is elongated. The lunula is yellow, with a black mark located above it. The facial knob is mostly black. The alula is triangular. Tergite 2 usually has either small elongated yellow marks or small triangular yellow marks. Tergites 3 and 4 each have a pair of spots or narrowly connected bands. The male terminalia were illustrated by Hippa in 1968. The larva has been described and illustrated by Rotheray in 1994. Consult the references for species determination.

Distribution: This species occurs in the Palearctic realm. Its range extends from Fennoscandia southward to Iberia and the Mediterranean basin, and from Ireland eastward through Europe into the European parts of Russia and Turkey.
