About Melete lycimnia (Cramer, 1777)

Melete lycimnia, commonly known as the common melwhite, primrose flag, or lycimnia white flag, is a butterfly species belonging to the family Pieridae. Its distribution ranges from Texas in the United States south to Bolivia. It inhabits lowland rainforests. The wingspan of adult Melete lycimnia measures 52–56 mm (2.0–2.2 inches). Adult appearance varies by subspecies: the subspecies M. l. peruviana has a white base wing color, narrow black borders, and a yellow spot at the base of the hindwings, while the nominate subspecies M. l. lycimnia is primrose yellow with wide brown borders. Across all subspecies, female individuals are more yellowish than males. Larvae are thought to feed on plant species in the family Loranthaceae.
