Melanoplus sanguinipes, first described by Fabricius in 1798, is a species of spur-throated grasshopper in the family Acrididae. Its most widely used common name is the migratory grasshopper. Additional common names for this species are lesser migratory grasshopper and red-legged grasshopper; note that the name red-legged grasshopper is also used as the common name for an entirely separate species. This grasshopper occurs in the Caribbean and North America.
