About Melanoleuca cognata (Fr.) Konrad & Maubl.
Melanoleuca cognata, commonly known as the spring cavalier, is a species of agaric fungus. This mushroom is fairly tall compared to other species in its genus. Its cap measures 5โ13 centimetres (2โ5 in) wide, has a semi-viscid texture, and ranges in color from orange to red-brown, lightening as the mushroom ages. The gills are ochre-colored and typically notched. The stipe is 6โ12 cm (2+1โ4โ4+3โ4 in) long and grows up to 2 cm thick. The odour of the mushroom is mild to sweetish, and it produces a creamy spore print. This species can be hard to identify without examining its microscopic features. Melanoleuca cognata grows in forests, meadows, and parks in Europe and North America, and it is edible.
