About Melanodes anthracitaria Guenée, 1857

Melanodes is a monotypic moth genus that belongs to the family Geometridae, meaning it contains only one single species: Melanodes anthracitaria, which is commonly known as the black geometrid. This species is native to Australia, with documented presence specifically in southern Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania. Both the genus and the species were first described by Achille Guenée in 1857, which gives the species its full scientific name Melanodes anthracitaria Guenée, 1857. Adult females of the species have a wingspan of approximately 50 millimeters, while adult males have a smaller wingspan of around 40 millimeters. Adult moths are active between August and January, with flight timing varying based on their specific location. The caterpillar larvae of Melanodes anthracitaria feed on plants belonging to the Eucalyptus genus.
