About Melangyna lasiophthalma (Zetterstedt, 1843)
Scientific name: Melangyna lasiophthalma (Zetterstedt, 1843)
Description: Wing length ranges 7–9.25 mm. The facial prominence projects well beyond the frontal prominence. The post-orbital strip is wide. Most scutellar hairs along the anterior margin are yellow. The long hairs covering the general body surface are black and brownish-yellow. Hippa (1968) provided illustrations of the male terminalia. The larva was described and illustrated by Goeldlin (1974), and colour illustrations of the larva were published by Rotheray (1994). See the cited references for species determination.
Distribution: In the Palearctic realm, this species occurs from Iceland and Fennoscandia, south to the Pyrenees and the mountains of Spain. It is found in Ireland, and extends east through Northern Europe and mountainous regions of Central Europe, continuing east into European Russia and Siberia. In the Nearctic realm, it occurs from Alaska, south to Colorado and Maryland.
