About Megophrys brachykolos Inger & Romer, 1961
Boulenophrys brachykolos (scientific name originally published as Megophrys brachykolos Inger & Romer, 1961) are relatively small but robust frogs. Males measure 34โ40 mm (1.3โ1.6 in) in snout-vent length, while females measure 40โ48 mm (1.6โ1.9 in). They have a strongly projecting snout and a small horn-like tubercle at the edge of the upper eyelid, which is the characteristic "horn" that gives horned toads their name. There has been taxonomic uncertainty over whether this taxon is a valid species or only a subspecies of Megophrys minor, but molecular genetic evidence now supports its status as a distinct species. Recent research has also shown that this species has a wider distribution than was previously assumed. When the IUCN conducted its assessment of the species in 2004, it was barely known outside of Hong Kong and was classified as an endangered species. Because the species is now known to have a much wider distribution, its conservation status is likely to change when the IUCN assessment is updated.
