About Megarhyssa greenei Viereck, 1911

Megarhyssa greenei is very similar in appearance to Megarhyssa macrurus. However, M. macrurus has a relatively longer ovipositor that measures around twice its total body length, while the ovipositor of M. greenei is only slightly longer than one times its total body length. M. macrurus also usually has more extensive dark markings on its wings, and has dark striping on its face that M. greenei lacks. M. greenei is a species of parasitoid wasp that parasitizes the sawfly Tremex columba. Female M. greenei locate T. columba larvae, then lay an egg on or close to the larva. After hatching, the M. greenei larva devours the host larva. It then pupates under tree bark, and emerges as an adult wasp one year later.
