About Megalonotus praetextatus (Herrich-Schaeffer, 1835)

Megalonotus praetextatus is a medium-sized ground bug that reaches a body length of approximately 3.9–5.1 mm (0.15–0.20 in). The head, scutellum, and pronotum of these bugs are black or dark brown. The pronotum is smooth, hairless, and very shiny on its upper surface, and it is heavily punctured, especially across the posterior margin. Legs are brownish yellow, with the exception of the front leg femora, which are dark brown and marked by one long tooth plus several other small teeth. Antennal segments 1 and 2 are black on the underside and yellow brown on the upper side, while segments 3 and 4 are solid black. The front wings are glossy and partially yellow-brown, and the membrane is blackish. This species is present across most of Europe. Its range extends from North Africa through the Mediterranean region to southern Scandinavia and the British Isles. To the east, its range stretches from Southeastern Europe and Asia Minor across the Caucasus to the Caspian region. In Britain, this species occurs rarely and only in localized populations. These ground bugs favor dry, sunny, warm areas with sandy and calcareous soils, such as sand dunes, cliffs, and sandy grasslands.
