About Megalodontes cephalotes (Fabricius, 1781)
Megalodontes cephalotes is a species of sawfly that adults can reach a body length of 8–12 millimetres, which is 0.31–0.47 inches. These sawflies are quite rare. They have a glossy black body with narrow light yellow bands on the abdomen. The upper margin of the pronotum is yellow. This species has a large head, and pectinate antennae with darkened flabelli closer to the apex. Their wings are reddish in color. This species is only found in Europe, with recorded presence in Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, and Yugoslavia. It is typically a mountainous and alpine species, though it also occurs in lowland areas. It lives on warm south-facing slopes and in dry grasslands, at elevations up to 2,400 metres, or 7,900 feet, above sea level.
