Mauremys leprosa (Schweigger, 1812) is commonly called the Iberian pond turtle, and is also known as the Mediterranean pond turtle or Mediterranean turtle. It is a species of turtle in the family Geoemydidae, and the species is endemic to southwestern Europe and northwestern Africa. The native distribution of Mauremys leprosa covers the western mainland Mediterranean Basin, ranging from the southern tip of France to northwestern Maghreb, which includes Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya. It occurs most frequently in the southern half of the Iberian Peninsula, which includes Portugal and Spain.
