About Matthiola sinuata (L.) W.T.Aiton
Matthiola sinuata, commonly known as sea stock, is a coastal plant species belonging to the family Brassicaceae. It is a short-lived biennial herbaceous plant that grows up to 60 centimeters in height, and does not spread via vegetative growth. This species grows on shorelines and newly formed sand dunes. In continental Europe, it is not considered rare, but it is rarely observed in the British Isles; it is already extinct in Scotland, and is believed to also be extinct in Ireland. In 2001, the IUCN assessed the conservation status of this species as vulnerable. The genus name Matthiola is named after Pierandrea Mattioli, an Italian physician and naturalist. The species epithet sinuata is the Latin term for sinuous, meaning wavy.
