About Marshallia graminifolia (Walter) Small
Marshallia graminifolia (Walter) Small is a perennial herb species that is endemic to the coastal plains of the Southern United States. It most often grows in bogs and sunny locations. Like all species in the genus Marshallia, it shares the common name Barbara's buttons, and this species is specifically called grassleaf Barbara's buttons. It produces fragrant flowers. Two subspecies of M. graminifolia are currently accepted: M. graminifolia subsp. graminifolia, and M. graminifolia subsp. tenuifolia. M. graminifolia subsp. tenuifolia has the common names narrowleaf Barbara's buttons or slim leaf Barbara's buttons. This subspecies grows in moist sandy habitats, including bogs, wet savannahs, and low pine woods in the south-east coastal areas of the United States. Its range extends from the south coast of Georgia along the Gulf coast into east Texas. The species has a deep taproot, produces lavender to white flowers, and bears achene fruit.
