About Marpissa muscosa (Clerck, 1757)

Marpissa muscosa (Clerck, 1757) is a species of jumping spider. Females of this species have an average body length ranging from 7.5 to 14 millimeters, while males have a body length ranging from 6 to 8.1 millimeters. Individuals of both sexes are colored grey to brown. The entire body of the spider has a furry appearance and a flattened shape. This species builds nests under the bark of dead trees, and up to 100 of these nests can occur side by side. Like other species in the Marpissa genus, Marpissa muscosa has a social hierarchy: weaker individuals acknowledge their inferiority by strutting their front legs and slowly retreating from the area. Early environmental conditions shape the personality types of developing Marpissa muscosa spiders. This species occurs in the Palaearctic region. Though it is rare in England, it can be found across the whole country, with greater presence in the south and east. It is widespread across northern Europe. Its typical habitats include spruce and pine trees, areas under tree bark, moorland, heathland, and locations around buildings.
