About Margarobyas lawrencii (P.L.Sclater & Salvin, 1868)
The bare-legged owl, scientifically named Margarobyas lawrencii, is a relatively small owl species. Adults measure 20–23 cm (8–9 in) in length and weigh approximately 80 g (2.8 oz). Its common name refers to its featherless, green-yellow legs, which are similar to the legs of the burrowing owl. This owl has dark brown eyes, no ear tufts, a cream-colored facial disk, and brown rictal bristles. Its upperparts are primarily brown to slightly rufous. Wing feathers have white barring, and the shoulder and scapular feathers bear white spots. The underparts range from gray to yellow-white, marked with brown streaking, and cross-barring may occasionally appear on the sides and breast. Juvenile bare-legged owls have plumage colors similar to adults, but have fewer white spots.
