About Manulea complana (Linnaeus, 1758)

Scientific name: Manulea complana (Linnaeus, 1758)

Technical description and variation: The wingspan of Manulea complana ranges from 28 to 35 mm. The species is very similar to Eilema morosinum (Herrich-Schäffer, [1847]), but differs in several key features. Manulea complana’s forewing is not as elongated, and its wing angles are not as sharply accentuated. Its costal streak is broader and a brighter shade of yellow, its hindwing is duller and less transparent, and the apex of its abdomen is a brighter yellow. On the underside of the forewing, the disc is a very dark blackish iron grey that contrasts sharply with the orange-yellow costa and the broad pale yellow marginal area. The underside of the hindwing is pale yellow, with a deeper yellow costa, and a grey streak running from the base below the costa.
