About Mantis octospilota Westwood, 1889

Mantis octospilota Westwood, 1889, commonly called the Eight-spot Mantis, is very similar in appearance to the European Mantis (Mantis religiosa). Adult Eight-spot Mantises reach around 3 inches in length. They have a short thorax and long wings. A black spot appears on their inner forelegs, with several smaller yellow spots located below this black spot. Adult individuals have eight black spots on their abdomen, which is the feature that gives the species its common name. These abdominal black spots are usually concealed by the mantis's wings. The entire body is densely covered in small, barely visible spots.
