About Mammillaria rekoi (Britton & Rose) Vaupel
Mammillaria rekoi (Britton & Rose) Vaupel has green, either globe-shaped or somewhat cylindrical stems. These stems grow up to 15 cm (5.9 in) tall, with a diameter between 5โ6 cm (2.0โ2.4 in), and may grow individually or form clumps. Each areole produces 4โ7 central spines that measure 10โ15 mm (0.4โ0.6 in) long. The central spines can be hooked or straight, and are much stouter than the species' 20โ30 radial spines, which measure 4โ6 mm (0.16โ0.24 in) long. The flowers are purple-pink to pink, with darker midveins, and grow up to 15 mm (0.6 in) long. When ripe, the fruits are red and contain brown seeds. This species is found only in central and northern Oaxaca, Mexico. It grows in oak forests on basalt, limestone cliffs, and clay soils, at altitudes ranging from 700โ3,000 m (2,300โ9,800 ft) above sea level.
